Welcome to Alaska Walk for Lupus Now

Lupus Foundation of America
Alaska Chapter

Saturday, September 19th, 2009
Thank you for your participation in this GREAT event!
The date for 2010's Walk for Lupus Now will be posted soon!

You can continue to raise donations for the Walk until October 15th both online and offline.

KNOWLEDGE ● ACTION ● HOPE

In cities and towns across America this year, thousands of people just like you will be walking in the nation's premier event to help the Lupus Foundation of America find a cure for lupus.

Everyone is welcome to participate in this great event! Many walk participants have lupus, or are family, friends, co-workers, or caregivers to someone with lupus. People often walk "in honor" of a friend or family members who has lupus or "in memory" of someone who has lost their battle with lupus. However, everyone is welcome to participate! Get your family and friends to walk and raise funds for the Alaska Walk for Lupus Now. Together, we can find a cure and help provide support, services and hope to Alaskans who live with lupus!

The Alaska Walk for Lupus Now will be a half day of fun, music, and friendship with activities for the whole family! We are promoting healthy living and physical activity in a family-friendly setting. Please join us!

WALK FOR LUPUS NOW BECAUSE:

  • The LFA Alaska Chapter is the state's only voluntary non-profit heath organization dedicated to finding the causes of and cure for lupus, and providing support, services and hope to over 3,000 Alaskans who live with lupus.

If you walk, you will help raise funds for lupus education, awareness, and support groups throughout Alaska.

  • Lupus is a complicated disease of the immune system that can cause damage to any tissue or organ in the body. On average, it takes 1 - 4 years and visits to 3 doctors for patients to be correctly diagnosed with lupus.

If you walk, you will help raise awareness and fund educational projects for the Alaskan medical community so that people won't have to wait up to four years for a diagnosis.

  • Early diagnosis and treatment can help significantly control lupus symptoms, yet awareness of lupus is lowest among women aged 18 - 24, those most at risk. Lupus generally strikes young women at the peak of their productivity, career, and reproductive potential. Lupus also affects children and men. If left undiagnosed, the consequences of lupus can be devastating, leading to heart attacks, strokes, seizures, miscarriages, and organ failure.

If you walk, you will help raise awareness of lupus in Alaska, promote early diagnosis, and help prevent needless deaths from undiagnosed lupus.

  • There is no known cause or cure for lupus. Current treatments can be very toxic and can have serious side-effects. There has not been a new FDA approved drug in over 50 years!

If you walk, you will help raise much needed funds for lupus research. 50 years is a long time to wait for anything, let alone a new drug to treat lupus!

  • African American, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, Native American, and Alaska and Hawaiian Native women are at highest risk for lupus.

If you walk, you can help promote awareness of lupus in the Alaska Native population and in other minority populations in Alaska - those at highest risk for developing lupus.

TAKE STEPS WITH US TO BRING HOPE TO MILLIONS OF AMERICANS AND THOUSANDS OF ALASKANS WHO LIVE WITH LUPUS!

GET STARTED TODAY:

  1. Register for the walk

  2. Set a personal fundraising goal. Although there is no fee for the 2009 Alaska Walk for Lupus Now registration, we suggest a $100 minimum donation.

  3. Form a Team. Establishing and walking with a team is more fun and makes it easier to raise donations for critical lupus research, support, and education.

  4. Start raising money. Set up a personal page online to email to everyone you know. Tell everyone you see that you are participating in Walk for Lupus Now and ask for their support.

  5. Walk with your friends, family, team members, and the rest of the Alaska Walk for Lupus Now participants on September 19th, 2009 at the amazing indoor track and field at the Alaska Dome.

  6. Keep raising $$. After the walk, share your experience with those that have not supported you with a donation. You have one month (until October 19, 2009) to continue raising funds!

  7. Win Great Prizes! All walkers who raise a minimum of $100 will receive a 2009 Walk for Lupus Now T-Shirt. The Top 10 fundraisers will receive prizes such as restaurant gift certificates, spa packages, shopping gift cards and much, much more!
